The Church

The Ebenezer Baptist Church
was founded in the year of 1939 by the R
everend B. J. Legins. The land was purchased from Mrs. Helen Knotts Sloan. On this land the first Ebenezer Baptist Church began construction in 1939. The material for the outside which was stone inclused was a gift from the State Highway Department.

Nearing completion, Pastor Legins and the congratation held their first service in the spring of 1940. At the time of the first service and until completion in 1941, the church used the creek in Baltimore Woods for baptizing. When the church was completed, it included a baptism pool and a nursery which served the weside community.

Under the leadership of Pastor Legins the church grew spiritually and in numbers. Many auxiliaries were organized and served faithfully including the Willing Workers Club which was organized by Mrs. Marie Clowney in 1939 who was a Mother of the church.

After World War II ended, many of our members returned to serve in the church. During the war era, the church and Pastor held an annual 4th of July picnic whihc continued for any years. In 1950 with the church's permission, the city established a playground on the church property to serve the Austin Street and surrounding community.

Reverend Legins health began to fail and with him stepping down as Pastor, the church elected Reverend Samuel Kay to become its second pastor in June of 1960. He served as pastor along with Reverend David Bryant as assistant until June of 1963.

Under the leadership of Pastor Cheeks, the present sanctuary was build in 1966-1967. The church was dedicated on the 2nd Sunday in April 1968. On May 19, 1968, the Cornerstone Laying Services were held for the building.

The chuch continued to flourish and grow. The conbination Fellowship Hall and Dining Room was added to the chuch in 1982-1983. In 1985, new pews were purchased for the church and a fellowship service was started with the Triedstone Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.

In 1989, the Pastor and congregation saw a need to add ot the church. This project called for the addition to the fellowship hall, sanctuary, pastors study, restrooms, sunday school rooms, and basement. This project was approved and carried out with a total cost of $250,000. This new project was completed in July 1991.

At the state of 1991, Pastor Cheeks retired due to illness and served as Pastor Emeritus until his death in April of 1991. As the new addition was being constructed, a Pulpit Committee was formed to search for a new Pastor. The new addition was completed in July of 1991 and the same month, Reverend George Downs was elected Pastor. Reverend George Downs was installed as Pastor in December 1991.

The church contined to prosper and grow. New lighting and new windows were added to the sanctuary. Ebenezer Baptist Church was instrumental to the Ernest Rice Estates project on Austin Street and surrounding areas.
